Wednesday afternoon, Alex went to a moving company and arranged to have her apartment packed up and put into storage. They delivered several boxes to her so she could pack some personal items and label boxes the way she wanted them labeled. She had enough money left on her lone credit card to pay them, along with the first three months of storage.

In November, she would find a new place to live. At least by traveling with the Vice President, she would stay in hotels for the next few months. She wandered through and made an inventory list back at her apartment, recording serial numbers, and using sticky notes to leave directions on certain items.

Jon called once and texted twice, but she didn’t reply. How could she explain what her father had done, how little worth she had left in the world?

How could she explain how she had even begun to consider giving in to her father’s demands? Could she hold fast? Could she do this on her own, with no friends, no family? She had started to doubt her resolve.

As soon as she could function on Thursday morning, she went to work packing. The morning sickness lasted later every day. Most of the time, she couldn’t do anything until well after noon, which frustrated her. She wondered if depression exacerbated the symptoms.

Jon texted only once. She needed to call him. She started to dial his number twice. Shame filled her heart and spilled from every pore in her body. She sat on her knees in the bathroom, her cheek resting on the cold tile floor, and just wailed. What would she do?

On Friday morning, she lay in bed and, curious, pulled out her laptop and started researching. Apparently, stress made morning sickness worse. Great. She couldn’t see an end to stress in her life any time soon.

Around noon, she got up and made a pot of tea and some toast. Once she ate, she continued packing, leaving most of it for the movers who would come next week after she left for DC.

She went back to bed and stared at the silent phone screen, overwhelmed with loneliness, scared about what tomorrow would hold. Finally, she keyed in her father’s number. He won. Before she could press send, a text came in from Jon.

Still here. Still missing you. Call when you’re ready.

With a sob, she threw her phone to the foot of the bed and covered her face with a pillow.

She knew why Justin stayed silent, but she sincerely thought her pizza brigade wouldn’t abandon her. It hurt, more than she could describe, to have them do this to her with such finality.

However, as she prepped to leave on her trip on Friday, she received a letter in the mail.

Our Dearest Alex:

You know how things are. Our families have threatened us to cut you off. Apparently, your father is wielding every bit of his influence. We didn’t want to risk contacting you in a way that could be traced, so we settled on this letter.
